1-Defining Fear: Primary vs Secondary

Primary Fear is a positive basic instinct created to allow for survival in the world of matter, life on earth.  Primal fear prevents us from walking into the middle of ongoing traffic, stepping into a fire filled forest, or jumping off a boat when we do not know how to swim.

Secondary fears color our emotions and beliefs. Societal influence, traditions, and individual experiences have allowed fear to creep into our emotions, beliefs and choices thus dictating our lives.

Societal Fear involves buying into the fear of others.  Levels are high following the aftermath of Covid, a world adjusting to long deserved social equality, the over dramatized expression associated with news and media, as well as the current political tensions.  Societal fear affects all of us.  It is contagious, coloring our beliefs, emotions and actions.  It limits our creativity and productivity.  Fear can hold us captive.

Adopting societal fear is an individual choice.  We can look at what is not working and instead of feeding the fear frensy, choose to contribute to change.  We all have gifts to share with the world, from a simple prayer to running for office or creating a new energy source.  We can choose to buy into the hype or we can choose a higher path of love and productivity vs fear and destruction.

Traditional or Instilled Fears are taught. They may include exclusivity and prejudice, a God-fearing religion, and or a strong unyielding political viewing point.  Traditional fears often involve fear of change and the unknown.  Some fears that are taught or instilled may influence our self-worth, personal performance or our view of self and the world.

Experiential Fear is derived from personal experiences that we view as having gone awry. It is important to remember that we are growing through our experiences.  It is common to feel that our experiences define us.  These perceived negative experiences, whether they be in love, career or performance, education, friends, or familial relationships, are simply learning tools to allow us choice for change or to move in another direction.  Experiential fear often involves a fear of failure.  Many people take the experiences of friends and family as their own, creating a fear that they haven’t even experienced. It is important to recognize our fears and choose change, or we may be doomed to repeat the experiences.

By choosing to address our fears, catch ourselves in the moment, and rally our courage to choose love over fear our lives begin to change.  As our lives change, the lives of those around us change.  As the energy of love begins to fill in for fear, we draw more positive energy and love into our lives.

This week let’s begin to list our fears.  Knowledge is power.  It is only when we become aware that we can choose change.
